Understanding captive portal

Captive Portal is the login page which is displayed to the hotspot users when they try to access the Internet. It is also called landing page or login page. The page provides options to the end users to validate themselves before they get online at public WiFi hotspots.

Captive Portals offers wide range of login options. Some operators/venues may choose to charge their end users for Internet access while others may offer the service for free. The captive portal allows hotspot operators/venues to restrict the users from getting unrestricted and unsupervised access to the Internet.

Captive Portal provides numerous options for validating the user. These include:

  • Username / Password
  • Prepaid Vouchers
  • Mobile number verification using SMS
  • Email Address
  • Click-through / T&C
  • Social Media validation
  • PMS (Last name / Room Number)
  • Survey Based
