Configuring UniBox Gateways

Purpose of this document

  • This document should be used in conjunction with UniBox user guide for configuring your UniBox gateways in WiOS. Please refer to WiOS administrator guide and UniBox user guide for detail information. It assumes that the user has basic knowledge of networking including configuring subnet mask, RADIUS setting, default gateway and DNS configuration.
  • In order to configure UniBox you will need a public IP address, Subnet mask, default gateway and DNS information given to you by your Internet Service Provider. Please keep this information handy while setting up your gateway.
  • Configuring WiOS you will need the WAN public IP address, MAC address, RADIUS secret and serial number  of your UniBox gateway.
  • You need an active WiOS account. Please contact Wifi-soft sales to create your WiOS account.

WiOS Setup

Add New Network:

  1. Open a web browser and type https://wios.wifi-soft.com/index.php and press Enter. Welcome screen of WiOS Cloud appears.

  2. Click the Networks link under Network Administration section.

  3. Click on the + sign in the top right corner tab. The New Network page appears.

No Fields and Buttons Description
1 Network Name Enter the name of your network/hotspot
2 Device Type Select the device type (UniBox) of your hotspot gateway or controller
3 Venue Select the type of venue
4 Address Displays the address of the network. You need to use the map to locate your address on the map. If you know the address, type the address in the search box on the map and click on search button. The map will display the marker for the address. If you unable to find the exact address, drag the map so the marker is pointing to correct location on the map.
5 Country The country where the hotspot is located.
6 Latitude The latitude of the network location
7 Longitude The longitude of the network location
8 Submit Click Submit button to save the changes.

Once the network is added, go back to the List Network page and locate the network that you have recently added.

Then, click on the edit button for the given network.

At the bottom of the page, you will find the Enable hotspot option.

Check this option to enable hotspot for this network. The hotspot settings appear below the form.

No Fields & Buttons Description
1 Enable hotspot Check this option if you want to enable hotspot service for this network.
2 Autologin Enable autologin for this location. Autologin helps end users connect to hotspot automatically without having to login each time. The MAC address of the device is used to identify the device on the network and system automatically validates the MAC address of the device and authenticates it. Please note that you need to enable Mac Authentication feature in the UniBox settings.
3 Validity Period The time period for autologin to remain active. After the given period, the autologin entry is deleted and user will have to relogin.
4 Auto MAC Capture Instructs the system to capture the user's MAC address automatically during first login. This option will ensure that user will remain online even if he has disconnected on the network for some time.
5 NAS ID Auto generated NAS ID for the gateway. This NAS Id should be added to the gateway so it can authenticate with the system. You need to copy the NAD ID and enter it in the gateway settings.
6 Secret Shared secret between gateway and RADIUS server. You need to add the secret to the gateway. The secret is used to encrypt the communication between gateway and RADIUS server. You need to copy the shared secret and enter it in the RADIUS settings of the gateway.
7 IP Address Enter the Public IP address of the gateway if you know it. Otherwise use the default one.
8 Plan Select the plan based on your requirements. The plan will restrict the number of concurrent devices allowed on the network.
9 Interim Interval Enter the interim interval for the accounting packets in seconds. Sometime this setting needs to be done on the gateway.

Once the hotspot is enabled, WiOS will be ready to start accepting AAA requests from the gateway/controller. When the hotspot is added, WiOS will automatically add a default captive portal for the hotspot. You may go an edit the captive portal and customize it as per your requirements.

Now you will need to design a captive portal for your hotspot and generate a URL that can be configured in the gateway/controller's settings.

Please refer to the captive portal design guide for steps to design your custom captive portal.

 UniBox Setup

We have assumed that you have properly connected your UniBox gateway with your broadband connection that has a static or dynamic public IP address. Additionally, your UniBox gateway admin interface is accessible either via the LAN interface or via the public WAN interface as shown in the figure below.

You need to log into UniBox using your admin credentials.

Step 1: Configuring LAN Profile

You need to configure the LAN profile in UniBox. The LAN profile will setup a LAN subnet that will be used for the hotspot network. To configure LAN profile, go to Network -> LAN section. Click on the + icon in top-right of the screen.

ub-lan.png

Enter the profile name. Also enter the IP address and subnet mask for the network. If you want to run hotspot on this subnet, you need to enable the DHCP settings. You can choose to have internal or external DHCP for the network. For external DHCP, you need have another DHCP server running in your network. If you choose internal DHCP, enter the IP address range by specifying the IP pool start and end address. Also enter the DHCP lease renewal time in seconds and the domain name for the subnet. Save the LAN profile settings.

Step 2: Associate LAN profile to an interface.

Next, you need to associate the newly created LAN profile to one of the ports in UniBox. You can associate the LAN profile to either physical or virtual port.

To associate, LAN profile first go to Interface and click on physical interface. From the list, click on the gear icon next to the desired interface. In the popup dialog, select the LAN option and then select the newly added LAN profile from the drop-down list. This will assign the LAN profile to the given interface.

# Parameter Name Description
1 Controller Name Give a friendly name for the controller.
2 LAN Profile Select the LAN profile from drop-down list on which the hotspot will run
3 Authentication Mode Select type of authentication mode. To configure UniBox with WiOS, you need to select the Remote authentication mode
4 Primary RADIUS server Enter the IP address of the primary radius server - 3.20.135.30
5 Secondary RADIUS server Enter the IP address of the secondary radius server. Enter the same IP as above for WiOS
6 Shared Secret Enter the shared secret for the RADIUS authentication. You need to copy the secret from the Edit Network section in WiOS. The secret is auto-generated by WiOS.
7 NAS ID Enter the NAS Identifier for the controller. You will find the NAS ID for the controller from Edit Network section under Network management in WiOS.
8 Authentication & Accounting Ports

Enter the authentication and accounting ports.

Authentication: 1812, Accounting : 1813

9 Interim Interval

Enter the interim interval for Radius session packets in seconds.

10 Realm

Enter a short name (e.g. wifisoft) as realm for the users who use the hotspot.

11 Autologin

Check the box if you want to enable autologin i.e. MAC authentication on the hotspot. Autologin will help users login automatically when they connect to hotspot

12 Is Active

Check this box to make the hotspot profile active.

Step 4: Configure the Captive Portal

Next, you need to configure the captive portal for the hotspot. To configure the captive portal, you need to click on the Portals menu under Authentication.

You can use one of the internal captive portal design or setup external portal. For WiOS setup, we recommend using the external captive portal option.

To configure the external captive portal, click on the wrench icon on the top-right section of the list portal page. It will display the list of configured portal for each hotspot controller.

Click on the another wrench icon associated with the desired controller. A popup dialog will appear.

ub-portal.png

Select the external portal option and enter the portal page URL. The portal URL will be generated in WiOS application. Please review the guide for creating captive portals in WiOS for more information.

You can either choose session page as welcome URL or enter a custom URL. Welcome URL will be displayed to the user when the user successfully logs in.

Save the settings.

This completes the configuration of UniBox with WiOS.
